At the end of Book 1 Professor Wentworth was visited by a shady character, Gershom Oxenstein, who was asking for help, which Wentworth did not provide. In this volume Oxenstein meets a violent death. Wentworth feels guilty and looks into case only to find out the people are not always what they seem to be.
