Work Experience
I am going to begin this a little earlier in my life than is typical on most resumes because I think it makes an important point.
Prior to the 8th grade I was working for room and board and a small allowance. Then I got my first paper route. For those of you who are to young to know what this means, A truck would drop off a bundle of newspapers on a given corner and I would deliver them to the front porches of the subscribes in the area.
Around 10th grade I got a job mowing a neighbors yard while he was away for the summer. I don't recall all the details but within a couple years that one lawn mowing job had turned into many jobs and my parent's lawn mower had turned into several mowers, tractors, landscaping equipment, and a truck to haul it all around. My father helped a lot with this.
Sometime before my senior year in high school we sold the lawn mowing business and I had a variety of jobs including working at a deli and working in a concession stand at a drive in movie. I had gotten used to earning money and I liked it. I had also developed a fairly strong work ethic.
Shortly after graduation from high school I started working at the CIA in Langley. I did not like it at all and went back to school to redeem myself after an abysmal performance in high school. Twenty two years later, I had, a BS, an MS, an MBA and a PhD. I feel redeemed.
My first "real" job was in 1976 as a programmer. I continued bouncing around in the software industry until 1992 when I became an academic. I continued as an academic until 2019 when I retired.
Upon retirement in 2019, I immediately began my encore career as a writer which is currently my profession and obsession.
